Athenian Restaurant
About This Spot
Stepping into Athenian Restaurant feels like entering a cherished neighborhood retreat where the pace slows just enough to savor simple, honest moments. Nestled in a quiet corner of Lakeland’s Central Park Plaza, this modest Greek eatery carries a humble, lived-in charm—the kind that invites you to settle in and stay a while among familiar faces and warm smiles.
The mood here drifts somewhere between comforting and unpretentious, where mornings are bright with the scent of freshly brewed coffee and the clatter of hearty breakfasts being served. There’s a gentle hum of conversation, mostly among longtime patrons, many of whom have found solace in this spot’s steady presence. It’s a place where days begin with generous plates stacking fluffy pancakes or savory omelettes, and where the rhythms of classic American diner fare brush shoulders with the subtle hints of Mediterranean heritage.
At Athenian, the food feels like a welcoming handshake—a thoughtful mix of classic comfort and genuine effort. The savory richness of a country fried steak or the satisfying heft of their famously substantial burger blends seamlessly with the warm, chatty atmosphere. And for those drawn to a taste of Greece, platters of souvlaki and gyro find their way to your table with no fuss, just straightforward, well-crafted flavors.
The space remembers the quiet joy of shared breakfasts after a Sunday service, the ease of community gatherings, and the peaceful pocket away from more hurried, bustling spots. Servers know regulars by name, and there’s a reassuring consistency in both fare and company, making it a favored destination for those seeking a slice of calm and good food without pretense.
Ultimately, Athenian Restaurant is less about flash and more about feeling grounded—a little worn around the edges but full of character. It’s a place where your meal is part of a slower, familiar rhythm: easy, steady, and sincere.

Update: Service is slow, but food is getting better or it's growing on me. Main customers are of the older generation which is a nice change of screaming kids. Gave more stars because like I said food is growing on me. Looking for something a little different this is the place. Have no doubt we will be back Nov 2021 2 Stars Going to talk about the good, before the bad. Small place, good music, food was ok, and they had bendy straws. It's some time since I have used a bendy straw, the memories that go with something so simple. Now the bad, be prepared to wait, they are super slow. 2 waitresses, one of them is very impatient, sometimes it takes me a minute to process what people say and she was getting angry, it could be just how she is, but being a server you need patience & she has none. Made this experience very unhappy.

While at a local pharmacy on Ariana Street, I asked the pharmacist to recommend a good place for lunch and he said the Athenian Restaurant, located across the street in the Central Park Plaza. The restaurant’s address is 1215 Ariana Street, in Lakeland and it can be found at the extreme east end of the strip mall. Open from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. This is a relatively small restaurant. I had the Gyro Sandwich which is gyros, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki sauce, wrapped in a toasted pita. I added a side of fries and an unsweetened tea. It was delicious! My daughter had the Combination of Both with Toasted Pita. This consisted of toasted pita with bowls of Tzatziki and their home-made Humus. She said that it was delicious and that she would order it again! The wait staff was friendly and helpful, easily answering our questions about the menu. The Pharmacist described this place as a “hole-in-the-wall” and that it was his favorite. Athenian restaurant is a favorite of ours, too!

When we're in Florida we go to the Athenian almost every Sunday after church for brunch. Their breakfasts are really good and abundant, and 1 fluffy pancake is enough, as it fills the plate and is almost 1/2" thick. Lunch is very good, too. Homemade food, not out of a can. The atmosphere is down-home, well-worn and comfortable. The servers are very friendly.

10-15 ladies in my community go to breakfast once a month and Athenian is one of our favorites! Their food is very good, fair priced, lovely waitresses. We were just there this morning! (13 of us) (Make sure to let them know you are coming if it's a larger party)

This little hole in the wall is a true gem had a craving for some gyros.. we're not disappointed the food was excellent, I only gave the atmosphere a four-star because it's a very simple setting nothing fancy. Will definitely come back here again!
